James 1:22-24 NKJV
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; 24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.
- God is telling us that we need to act on what He has instructed us or taught us. Not doing so amounts to deceiving ourselves.
- Reading the Word helps us to take a look at ourselves and see where we’ve gone wrong, just like a mirror helps us see if we look okay, but the most important thing is not just seeing that you have some dirt on your face, but also going ahead to wash your face. And so it is the same way with God’s Word. The most important thing is not just knowing where we’re going wrong but to also do something about it, according to the Word.
- Not doing something about it is actually deceiving yourself. It is like making yourself believe that you’re making progress and yet you are still in the same place.
